The new Japanese book – Chukyuu e Ikou – is great!
The big downside is that there isn’t a Memrise course for the book, so I’m making one as I go. It’s kind of tedious, to be honest, but I did the first chapter and am studying it.
The book itself is great. The first chapter is all about Fast Food (ファストフード). That may not be the most interesting topic in the world, but digging into it in Japanese is fun. There is an essay to read, and it is at the perfect level. I have to work at it some to read it, but not excessively.
There are questions to answer about the essay.
There are new grammar points. They are presented in a way similar to Minna no Nihongo, but they way you get reviewed on them is more interesting to me.
Looking ahead, it looks like there is there is a dictation (sort of) section. The essay is read (at a very rapid pace!). It is also written out with some blanks in it, and, listening, you are supposed to fill in the blanks. (At least, I think that’s what you’re supposed to do. The grammar points pages have minimal English, and I don’t think there’s an English word anywhere else in the book.
All in all, it is definitely harder than Minna no Nihongo, but I’m having a lot of fun with it.
